Some of the most amazing hotels…
They did not start out as buildings of luxury where the wealthy came for a quiet respite. Rather, a few of the top hotels were once home to prisoners and some of the most corrupt people in society. The locations below went through amazing transformations to become top destinations hotels around the world.
The Liberty Hotel: Boston
Finished in 1851, The Charles Street Jail was the county lock up for over a hundred years. During its run as a jail, it housed everyone from Malcolm X to the former Boston Mayor, James Michael Curley. The jail was closed in the early 90s and was redeveloped into a 298-room hotel. The developers held onto some of the original design, creating a cellblock like atmosphere in the restaurant with the use of original exposed brick and bars from the cellblock.
Malmaison Oxford, England
Built in the 11th century as part of the Oxford Castle the building that is home to the Malmaison hotel was partially destroyed during the English Civil War. It was turned into a prison during the 18th century and then ultimately renovated into a hotel sometime around 2006. The interior of the building includes original cell doors and brickwork from the prison that has been interwoven with updated design elements. What was once a dark and dreary place, now has skylights and bright, airy décor that hides any reference to its former life.
Four Seasons Sultanahmet: Istanbul
This beautiful hotel was once home to a Turkish Prison. Constructed in the early 1900s and built by architect Mimar Kemaleddin Bey, the Four Seasons took over the property in 1990. The chain transformed the location into one of the region’s top luxury hotels. Though there were many updates and changes made to the property a number of the original design elements remained. During the reconstruction, they opted to keep the original hand-painted tile floors and opted not to change the arched doorways. The former prison exercise yard has been transformed into an elegant enclosed garden are where guests of the hotel enjoy gourmet meals made from local meats and fresh produce.
